The following is a guest blog post by one of our community partners, the Kids in Need Foundation

BIC is the National Pen Sponsor of the Kids In Need Foundation, a national 501(c)(3) charitable organization that provides free school supplies to students most in need. With 16 million kids in America struggling with extreme poverty, having school supplies can make all the difference to their future success.

Studies show that kids who have their own school supplies see improvement in many areas: grades, classroom behavior, and engagement, as well as self-esteem and attitudes toward school and learning.

Yet these kids often cannot afford the supplies they need. And in order to have all the supplies necessary to run a classroom properly, teachers spend an average of $500 out of their own pockets each year.

With help from BIC, Kids In Need can provide students with the writing tools essential for learning and succeeding in school. Through the Foundation’s National Network of 38 Resource Centers, teachers from low-income schools can shop for free supplies for their classrooms. Communities not served by Resource Centers can receive materials through the School Ready Supplies program. As one teacher said: “These supplies enable students to complete their work and succeed in school where they would otherwise fail.”

Thanks to the generosity of companies like BIC, the Kids In Need Foundation has distributed nearly $800 million in school supplies since its founding, directly benefiting 4.8 million students and more than 150,000 teachers annually, and has awarded $1.7 million in grants to teachers.
